Splendida e rarissima scultura in bronzo argentato a mercurio, con una lega dal forte tenore di metalli nobili, raffigurante il Buddha storico Shakyamuni seduto in dhyanasana, con le mani nel samadhi mudra, gesto rituale della meditazione trascendentale. L'opera, di sublime perfezione tecnica e di grande impatto espressivo, è stata certamente realizzata da un atelier di altissimo livello e su richiesta di un committente di prestigio.  Solo pochissimi esemplari di questa squisita fattura, appartenenti al cosiddetto periodo dei "Regni Divisi" (1232 - 1597) sono sopravvissuti al turbolento ed instabile periodo che ha preceduto l'instaurazione del regno unificato di Kandy, e costituiscono motivo di orgoglio dei più grandi musei di arte asiatica del mondo. La scultura, che vanta una provenienza documentabile dalla collezione di un antiquario londinese annoverato da decenni tra i più importanti del mondo, è ascrivibile in via conservativa al sec. XV°. A superb and extremely rare sculpture in fire-silvered bronze alloy, mixed with preciuos metals, representing the historical Buddha Shakyamuni sitting in dhyanasana, with the hands resting into the lap in samadhi mudra, ritual gesture of the transcendental meditation. This artwork, that for quality and technical perfection can be enumerated among the most important samples that have reached our days, rises to the level of universal masterpiece. Only a few dozens of this exquisite quality, belonging to the so-called period of the "Divided Kingdoms" (1232 - 1597) have survived to the turbulent and unstable period that preceded the installation of the unified kingdom of Kandy, and today constitute cause of pride of the greatest museums of Asian art of the world. The sculpture, that boasts a documented provenance from the collection of a world - class london dealer, may be attributed conservatively to the 15th century.
